SCENE 2:
More than a year before Jesus was
born, Gabriel, the Angel of the Lord,
appears to Zacharias, the priest, in
the Temple where he is fulfilling his
priestly duties. Zacharias is told by
Gabriel that his wife, Elizabeth, will
give birth to a baby boy. Zacharias
finds this hard to believe because he
and Elizabeth have been childless all
their lives and now they are old and
well past the time of child-bearing.
Although they have longed for a son,
they had given up hope of ever having one.
GABRIEL: Do not be afraid,
Zacharias
Your prayers have been heard and
it will be done
Your wife, Elizabeth, will conceive
And she will bear you a son
And you will have joy and gladness
And many on earth will rejoice at
His birth
For He will be great in the sight of
the Lord
He’ll be filled with the Spirit
before He is born
Do not be afraid, Zacharias
Your prayers have been heard and
it will be done
Your wife, Elizabeth, will conceive
And she will bear you a son
He’ll point the way to Messiah
He’s been set apart to turn many
a heart
He’ll be a man who will not be ignored
He will make ready a people
prepared for the Lord
So do not be afraid, Zacharias
Your prayers have been heard and
it will be done
Your wife, Elizabeth, will conceive
And she will bear you a son
And you will call his name John
