Many years ago
I used to sit on mama’s knee
And listen to the words of wisdom
Handed down to me
A story of two brothers
Long ago and far away
How one despised the other
So he took his life away
She told of Cain and Abel
How Cain took Abel’s life
How Abel pleased the Lord
While Cain was filled with hate and stride
One good, the other evil
So it is with every man
There comes an inner struggle
‘Til one gets the upper hand
I said, mama, I don’t think I understand
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
Do all you can to keep that man alive
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
For he who is Abel can bring eternal life
She said, Cain is that ole carnal man
He lives inside of you
And Abel is the godly man
Someday he’ll live there, too
Now Cain may say that it’s okay
To do what pleases you
But Abel’s way will be to say
Serve God in all you do
Someday, you’ll grow up big and strong
And you’ll become a man
You’ll make your own decision
As you journey through the land
Then the time will come when you must side
With one man or another
And when you do, the one you choose
Will take life from the other
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
Do all you can to keep that man alive
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
For he who is Abel can bring eternal life
So many years have passed
Since I first heard what mama said
About the battle between right and wrong
That would go on in my head
But Abel is alive and well
And in my heart today
And it’s all because a little boy
Once heard his mama say
Don’t let Cain kill Abel
Do all you can to keep that man alive
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
For he who is Abel can bring eternal life
Don’t let Cain kill Abel
Do all you can to keep that man alive
She said, don’t let Cain kill Abel
For he who is Abel can bring eternal life
